Design Brief: Mid Century Modern Style & Precision Craftsmanship

Mid Century Modern Kitchen Design

This modern kitchen is a great example of close collaboration between the builder, designer and client. Affinity Kitchens designer Theresa Franklin worked with the homeowner and builder who shared a strong vision for the space. The new kitchen was designed to maintain the feel of the home’s original Mid Century Modern architecture while integrating new technology and improving storage, lighting and functionality.

The available space was quite small, so we needed to be efficient with storage and seating to maintain proper flow around the island and along the rock feature wall into the adjacent sitting area. With the feature wall, two windows and exterior door there wasn’t a lot of space for upper cabinets. In spite of the spacing challenges, we were to provide ample storage and accommodate a large number of Gaggenau appliances including refrigerator, cooktop, oven, microwave, dishwasher (raised up with a stainless toe kick) and coffee station without sacrificing food preparation surfaces.

The precision in this kitchen is incredible. For example, if you look at the upper cabinets you’ll notice that the grain matches are perfect and there are no trim pieces; the cabinets go right to the ceiling so there is very little margin for error. Builder John Ruyle from Moss Custom Homes says, “It is very rare that you walk into a kitchen and see the type of tight reveals that have been accomplished here. This kitchen is consistent throughout. This kitchen has a combination of details that I’ve never seen before.” The framers and cabinet installers have to be in sync to accomplish exemplary work like this.

The main countertop surface has a flat polish edge flush with the cabinet fronts to give it that contemporary look.

The contrasting raised counter has a dramatic knife edge and provides seating for three at the end of the island. The black inset reveal gives all of the counters a floating effect.
